At the 2024 SEMA Show, Toyota unveiled its GR86 Rally Legacy Concept, a creative tribute to the brand’s deep-rooted rally history. Built on the 2024 GR86 with the Performance Package, this bold concept car highlights Toyota’s dedication to blending high-performance engineering with nostalgia and the future of rally racing.
The announcement comes amid growing speculation about the World Rally Championship (WRC) returning to the United States, prompting Toyota to celebrate its legacy in motorsports. Drawing inspiration from the iconic ST185 and ST205 Celica GT-Four rally cars, the GR86 undergoes a comprehensive powertrain transformation, swapping in the GR-FOUR all-wheel-drive system and 3-cylinder turbocharged engine from the GR Corolla.
Paul Doleshal, general manager of Motorsports and Assets at Toyota Motor North America, commented, “The goal was to evoke the memories of the legendary rally cars that fans have admired on the rally stages and in racing video games. That concept sparked the idea of creating a modern interpretation of such an iconic vehicle.”
The project began with a vision that merged two key sports cars from Toyota’s GR lineup. The challenge of adapting the GR86 to house the GR Corolla’s taller, transverse-mounted G16E-GTS engine and AWD drivetrain required extensive modifications. The GR86’s chassis had to be altered to fit the new powertrain, including adjustments to the front section, as well as a custom subframe and engine mounts. Additionally, the conversion to all-wheel drive necessitated significant changes to the front suspension, including the integration of GR Corolla hubs, spindles, and axles to channel power to the front wheels. Custom coil-over dampers and control arms were also added to complement the modifications.
At the rear, the GR86’s stock differential was swapped for the GR Corolla’s, ensuring consistent gear ratios and power distribution, with modified GR Corolla rear axles to maintain proper fitment.
The 1.6-liter G16 engine in the GR86 Rally Legacy Concept benefits from several performance upgrades, such as a performance intercooler and an oil cooler to manage temperatures. A race-tuned ECU handles engine management, optimizing fuel delivery, timing, and boost control. While the GR86 Rally Legacy Concept maintains the GR Corolla’s original 300 horsepower and 273 lb-ft of torque, further tuning could boost performance even more.
The car’s exterior features a bold Halo White paint job with heritage-inspired red and green accents, along with modern Toyota and Toyota Gazoo Racing logos. Rally-inspired elements include large red mudflaps, a custom exhaust system, and a Celica GT-Four-style rear spoiler, capturing the vintage rally car aesthetic.
Inside, the GR86 Rally Legacy Concept features a full roll cage painted in bright white, with racing seats and red six-point harnesses, matching the Toyota Gazoo Racing color scheme.
Mike Tripp, group vice president of Toyota Marketing, said, “The GR86 Rally Legacy Concept represents Toyota’s unwavering passion for rally racing. It’s a fantasy car come to life, created for our GR and rally fans as a celebration of our motorsports legacy and the potential return of the World Rally Championship to the U.S.”
The GR86 Rally Legacy Concept showcases Toyota’s strategy of fusing heritage with forward-thinking innovation. It is on display at the 2024 SEMA Show from November 5-8 at the Las Vegas Convention Center, located at Toyota’s booth (Central Hall, Booth 22200).
