According to a recent survey by Ford Motor Company, over 55 percent of UAE residents are considering buying an electrified vehicle in the next year.
As part of its comprehensive research across multiple markets, Ford engaged with UAE residents who either own a car or are in the market for a new one. The aim was to gauge perceptions of electrified vehicles to better position itself for an all-electric future, aligning with Ford’s commitment to supporting the region’s transition to electric mobility and establishing the UAE and Dubai as a global automotive hub.
The findings underscore the importance of ongoing public education about electric vehicles (EVs), addressing concerns regarding cost, range, and infrastructure, and highlighting the advantages of electric mobility. Key insights from the research include:
Familiarity with EVs: Car buyers in the UAE are generally familiar with electric vehicles. Most respondents described them as “fun to drive,” “cool,” “sporty,” and “easy to own.” Over 38 percent had experienced riding in an EV, 54 percent had driven one, and 60 percent had read about them.
Pros and Cons: Many respondents view saving money on fuel as a major benefit of owning an EV, though there is a perception that maintenance costs may be higher over time.
Everyday Use of EVs: Most participants expressed that they would be “more likely” to use an electric vehicle for tasks like grocery delivery and ridesharing, and they preferred an EV for daily commutes.
Preferred Types of Electrified Vehicles: Hybrid vehicles were the most favoured option among those surveyed, followed by plug-in hybrids, with pure battery electric vehicles ranking third.
Desire for Capability: Almost 80 percent of respondents indicated they would be “more likely” to buy an EV with greater towing capacity, and 79 percent expressed interest in off-road capability. There are still concerns about the luggage and payload capacity of EVs compared to internal combustion engine vehicles.
Charging Awareness: Sixty-six percent of respondents knew of a few charging stations within 20 kilometres of their home, with 70 percent believing shopping centres would be the ideal locations for charging stations, followed by service stations and office buildings. Twenty-two percent cited “inadequate charging infrastructure” as a barrier to purchase.
Misconceptions: Despite the positive perceptions, nearly half of respondents believe that charging an EV at home is as costly as refuelling a traditional vehicle.
Ford is committed to an electrified future in the Middle East and beyond, offering innovative vehicles that meet customer expectations, including popular models like the Taurus.
