Nissan Xterra Set for a Rugged Comeback by 2029

The Nissan Xterra is officially making a return, and it’s shaping up to be one of the most exciting revivals in the off-road SUV segment. After being discontinued in 2015, the Xterra built a loyal following thanks to its rugged design and true go-anywhere capability. Now, with the surge in demand for adventure-ready SUVs, Nissan is bringing back a familiar nameplate with a modern twist.

A Return to True Off-Road Roots

Unlike many modern crossovers that lean more toward urban comfort, the upcoming Xterra is expected to stay true to its heritage. Early details suggest it will feature a body-on-frame chassis, a key ingredient for serious off-road performance. Combined with four-wheel drive, the new model aims to deliver the durability and capability that made the original so محبوب among enthusiasts.

This positions the Xterra directly against established off-road icons like the Ford Bronco and the Toyota 4Runner, both of which have seen massive popularity in recent years.

Powertrain: Traditional Meets Modern

Nissan has confirmed that the new Xterra will be powered by a V6 engine, ensuring strong performance both on and off the road. More interestingly, the brand is also planning to introduce an optional hybrid powertrain, marking a first for the Xterra lineup.

This move reflects the industry’s shift toward electrification while still maintaining the performance expectations of off-road drivers. A hybrid option could also improve fuel efficiency and torque delivery both valuable for long-distance adventures and challenging terrains.

Built for the Modern Explorer

While full details are still under wraps, the new Xterra is expected to blend its rugged DNA with modern technology, safety features, and improved interior comfort. Nissan is likely to position it as a versatile SUV that can handle both daily driving and weekend off-road escapes.

When Will It Arrive?

The new Xterra isn’t expected to hit the market until late 2028, likely as a 2029 model. While that may seem like a long wait, it signals that Nissan is taking its time to get the formula right.

Interestingly, a related model from Mitsubishi , potentially reviving the Pajero nameplate could arrive earlier, possibly in 2028, giving us a preview of what’s to come.

Final Thoughts

The return of the Nissan Xterra couldn’t come at a better time. With off-road SUVs dominating the market, Nissan is stepping back into a competitive space with a product that promises authenticity, capability, and modern innovation.

If Nissan delivers on expectations, the Xterra could once again become a favorite among off-road enthusiasts and adventure seekers alike.
